We have been working with the photoionization of small molecular compounds and their gas phase ion mobility analysis. We have developed sensitive fluorometric techniques for DNA probes employing fluorescence resonance energy transfer from conjugated polyelectrolytes. We have found that the combination of confocal laser scaning with mobility or mass spectrometric technologies can enhance gene expression or proteomics analysis. We can combine the surface plasmon enhanced fluorescent imaging of protein targets with the gas phase electrophoresis separation obtained for protein and peptide ions after desorption.The multi-dimensional spectral data acquired can supplement image processing techniques employed on the biochip array with the analyte.
